Communicating COVID-19 information through trusted messengers

The problem

Early surveys suggested that about 1/3 of the population was ready to get the COVID-19 vaccine as soon as possible, while the other 2/3s where either hesitant to get it or not wanting to get it. Hesitancy was even more pronounced amongst communities of color, which also have low levels of trust in government.

The project

A partnership between the New America Foundation, the Emerson Collective and the State of Colorado to better understand the information landscape for immigrant Coloradans regarding vaccines, and recommend processes for communicating culturally relevant and accurate COVID-19 vaccine information through trusted channels.

My role

  • Contributed to the qualitative research plan, focusing on methodology and representational sampling.

  • Led or documented interviews with community org leaders, Colorado staffers, and subject matter experts.

  • Helped draft, translate and test a survey of Coloradans about COVID-19 vaccine information.

  • Participated in research synthesis and the mid-point presentation.

  • Led Spanish usability testing of existing vaccine content.

  • Created a trusted messenger directory for the State of Colorado.

  • Helped present final findings and recommendations in oral (presentation) and written (blog) format.

  • Trained Colorado staffers to continue the work.
